    Relight

Control lighting in images and videos like a virtual studio — position lights, adjust color and intensity, or transfer lighting from a reference image.

The Relight tool gives you direct control over lighting in both images and videos. Instead of guessing with prompts, you place and shape light visually — adjusting direction, elevation, color, and intensity in a 3D preview. You can also upload a reference image and let the AI replicate its lighting on your content.

Available for both images and videos as separate tools in the AI Suite.

    How Relight works

Relight offers two modes for controlling lighting:

    ModeHow it works
RelightPosition one or more virtual lights around your image or video. Control direction, elevation, color, and intensity using a 3D preview and sliders. Full manual control.
Light transferUpload a reference image and the AI replicates its lighting style on your content. No manual positioning needed — the AI matches the reference automatically.

Both modes work on images and videos. The output resolution is 1080p.

    Relight mode: position lights manually

    1

    Open Relight

Go to freepik.com/pikaso/tools/relight for images or freepik.com/pikaso/tools/video-relight for videos.

    2

    Upload your content

Upload an image or video from your device or select one from your History.

    3

    Select the Relight tab

Make sure the Relight tab is active (not Light transfer).

    4

    Position your light

Use the 3D Light Preview to drag the light source around your subject. You'll see a cone of light indicating direction and coverage.

    5

Use Quick Select for fast positioning

Click a preset position — Top, Front, Right, Left, Back, or Bottom — to instantly place the light.

    6

    Fine-tune light settings

Adjust the light color, Rotate, Elevation, and Intensity sliders to get the exact look you want.

    7

    Generate

Click Generate. The AI renders your image or video with the new lighting applied.

    Light transfer mode

Light transfer lets you replicate the lighting from any reference image onto your own content — no manual positioning needed.

    1

    Open Relight

Go to the Relight tool for images or videos.

    2

    Upload your content

Upload the image or video you want to relight.

    3

Switch to the Light transfer tab

    Click the Light transfer tab.

    4

    Upload a light reference

Upload an image whose lighting you want to replicate. This can be a photo with dramatic side lighting, warm golden hour tones, neon effects — any lighting style you want to match.

    5

    Generate

Click Generate. The AI analyzes the reference and applies its lighting characteristics to your content.

Light transfer is especially useful when you want to match the look and feel of a specific style or when recreating lighting conditions from an existing photo is faster than building them manually.

    Quick Select positions

Quick Select lets you place the light in a standard position with one click. Six positions are available:

    PositionEffect
TopOverhead lighting. Natural, daylight-like feel. Even illumination with shadows falling downward.
FrontDirect frontal lighting. Reduces shadows. Clean, flat look — good for product shots and portraits.
Right / LeftSide lighting. Adds depth and dimension. Creates dramatic shadows on the opposite side of the subject.
BackBacklighting. Creates silhouette effects and rim light around edges. Dramatic and atmospheric.
BottomUpward lighting. Unusual and often dramatic or unsettling. Use intentionally for creative effect.

After selecting a Quick Select position, you can fine-tune the exact angle using the Rotate and Elevation sliders.

    Light settings

Each light source has the following adjustable properties:

    SettingWhat it does
ColorChoose the light color from preset swatches (warm white, cool white, orange, red, blue, cyan, rainbow) or pick a custom color. Color affects the overall mood of the scene.
RotateAdjusts the horizontal angle of the light around the subject (0° – 360°). Think of it as orbiting the light left or right.
ElevationAdjusts the vertical angle of the light (0° = level with the subject, higher values = light comes from above). Controls how high or low the light source sits.
IntensityControls how strong the light is (scale of 0–10). Lower values give subtle, ambient illumination. Higher values create brighter highlights and stronger shadows.

    Working with multiple lights

You can add more than one light source to your scene by clicking the + button next to the light indicator. Each light has its own independent color, position, and intensity settings.

Multiple lights let you build more complex and realistic lighting setups — for example, a warm key light from the front-right with a cool fill light from the left, mimicking a classic portrait setup.

Click on any light's number to select it and adjust its settings individually.

    Relight a video

Video relighting follows the same workflow as images. Open the Video Relight tool and upload your video instead of an image. Both Relight and Light transfer modes are available.

The key advantage of video relighting is consistency across frames. The AI applies the lighting coherently throughout the entire video, so you don't get flickering, mismatched frames, or shifting shadows between cuts.

This is especially useful for social media content, short-form video, product demos, and any motion content where lighting consistency matters.

    Tips for natural results

    • Start with a Quick Select position, then customize. The preset positions give you a solid starting point. From there, adjust Rotate, Elevation, and Intensity to fine-tune.
    • Match light direction to the scene. Light from above reads natural. Side light adds drama and depth. Bottom light is unusual — use it intentionally.
    • Use subtle intensity for realism. High intensity creates strong, dramatic effects. Lower values (2–4) often produce more natural-looking results.
    • Try warm and cool color combinations with multiple lights. A warm key light paired with a cool fill light creates depth and visual interest that mimics professional studio setups.
    • For Light transfer, choose references with clear lighting. Reference images with obvious, well-defined lighting will transfer more accurately than images with flat or ambiguous light.
    • Don't overdo it. Subtle changes often produce the most realistic results. Push the settings gradually rather than jumping to extremes.

    Credits and limits

Each Relight generation (image or video) consumes AI credits. The exact cost depends on the input and render settings.

Output resolution is 1080p for both images and videos.

    Common issues

The lighting looks flat or has no visible effect.

Try increasing the Intensity slider. If using a single light at low intensity, the effect can be too subtle to notice. Also check that the light position isn't directly behind the subject (Back position with low intensity will mainly create rim light, not illuminate the face).

Light transfer doesn't match the reference well.

The reference image should have clear, well-defined lighting. Images with flat, overcast, or ambiguous lighting don't transfer well. Try a reference with obvious directional light and strong highlights/shadows.

The video has inconsistent lighting between frames.

This is rare with Relight, as the tool is designed for frame-to-frame consistency. If you see flickering, try reducing the Intensity or simplifying the lighting setup (fewer lights, less extreme angles).

    Colors look unnatural after relighting.

Colored lights (red, blue, neon) are powerful creative tools but can overwhelm the image at high intensity. Lower the Intensity or switch to a neutral white light for more natural results.
