Image Editor
Your central workspace for AI-powered photo editing. Edit, retouch, resize, restyle, and adjust images in a single session.
The Image Editor brings all of Freepik's image editing tools into one workspace. Upload any image, apply as many tools as you need, and export the result. No need to switch between separate pages.
Looking for Background Remover or Image Upscaler? They have their own dedicated guides. Both are also accessible from inside the Image Editor.

How to open the Image Editor
- Go to freepik.com/ai/photo-editor and click Upload your photo.
- From the AI Suite top menu, click Image Editor under the Image section.
- From any image you have generated with the AI Image Generator, click Edit image.
- Inside Spaces, right-click any image node and select Edit.
Once inside, upload a photo (drag and drop, paste a URL, or pick from your creations) and choose any tool from the left panel.
The interface
The Image Editor has a simple layout. Your image sits in the center. The left panel gives you access to every tool. You can switch between tools freely without losing your progress. When you are done, export your image or continue working with it in other Freepik tools like mockups or designs.
Edit (Erase and Replace)
The Edit tool lets you modify your image in two ways: by describing changes in text or by drawing visual annotations directly on the image.
Prompt mode
Describe what you want to change using text. The AI interprets your instruction and applies the edit.
Select Edit
Open the Image Editor and select Edit from the tool menu.
Make sure Prompt is selected
This is the default mode.
Describe the change
Type what you want, for example: make the sky a warm sunset, add sunglasses, change the wall color to blue.
Choose a model
Select a model or leave it on Auto.
Click Generate
The AI applies the edit to your image.
Visual mode
Draw annotations, arrows, text, or marks directly on the image to guide the AI visually. This is useful when it is easier to show the AI what you want than to describe it in words.
Select Edit and switch to Visual
Toggle from Prompt to Visual mode.
Draw on the image
Click to add annotations: draw, write, or mark the changes you want.
Add a text prompt (optional)
Complement your visual instructions with a description.
Click Generate
The AI reads both your drawing and your text to apply the edit.
Erasing elements
To remove something without replacing it, use the Eraser. Select the area with a masking tool and click Generate without entering a prompt. The AI fills in the gap naturally based on the surrounding content.
Masking tools
| Mask type | How to use it | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Click mask | Drag a rectangle over the area. | Background items, wide areas |
| Lasso mask | Draw a freeform shape around the object. | People, pets, irregular shapes |
| Brush mask | Paint over the area with an adjustable brush. | Small text, logos, fine details |
Retouch
Retouch lets you select specific parts of an image and replace or refine them using AI. Select an area, describe what you want, and the AI generates the change.
Select Retouch
Open the tool from the left panel.
Mask the area
Use Lasso, Click, or Brush to select the area you want to change.
Describe the change
In the prompt box, type what you want in that area. For example: a golden retriever puppy, or short neat hairstyle, smooth texture.
Click Generate
The AI replaces the selected area with your description.
Extra features
- Include Image. Insert a specific reference photo in the masked area.
- Character mode. Generate people or pets within the selected region using your Custom Characters.
Resize (Crop and Expand)
The Resize tool lets you crop images to specific dimensions or expand them with AI-generated fill.
How to expand an image with AI
Select Resize then Expand
Open the Resize tool and click Expand.
Choose an aspect ratio
Select a ratio or use Presets (Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, etc.).
Drag the crop handles outward
Define the new space you want the AI to fill.
Add a prompt (optional)
Describe what should fill the expanded area. For example: forest background, natural light. Leave it blank to let the AI extend naturally.
Click Export
Choose Download, Upscale, or Use (to take the image to a mockup or design).
How to crop an image
Select Resize then Crop
Open the Resize tool and click Crop.
Choose a preset size
Pick from 1:1, 16:9, 9:16, and other common ratios, or use Presets.
Drag and reposition
Adjust the crop frame to frame the shot you want.
Click Apply
The image is cropped to your selection.
Restyle
Restyle transforms the visual style of your image while keeping its composition and structure intact. Apply a completely different aesthetic: photographic to illustration, vintage, cyberpunk, and more.
Select Restyle
Open the tool from the left panel.
Choose a style
Pick a preset style or describe the look you want in the prompt box.
Click Generate
Preview the result. The composition stays the same but the visual style changes.
Change Camera
Change Camera alters the framing, angle, or perspective of your image using AI. Switch from a wide shot to a close-up, shift the camera angle, or change the focal length without re-generating the image. Also available as a standalone tool.
Select Change Camera
Open the tool from the left panel.
Choose the new angle or framing
Select from the available perspective options.
Click Generate
Preview the result.
Skin Enhancer
Skin Enhancer improves portrait quality by enhancing skin texture, lighting, and overall look. Three enhancement modes cover different needs. Also available as a standalone tool.
| Mode | Best for |
|---|---|
| Creative | Stylized, artistic portrait edits. |
| Faithful | Natural improvements that preserve the original appearance. |
| Flexible | Targeted optimization with 5 presets: enhance skin, improve lighting, enhance everything, transform to real, no makeup. |
Additional controls
- Sharpness (0 to 100). Controls detail enhancement.
- Smart Grain (0 to 100). Maintains natural photographic texture.
- Skin Detail (Faithful mode only, 0 to 100). Controls how much original skin texture is preserved.
Upload your portrait
Open the Image Editor or the standalone Skin Enhancer tool.
Select Skin Enhancer
Open the tool.
Choose a mode
Start with Flexible, then explore Creative or Faithful based on your project.
Adjust sliders
Fine-tune Sharpness, Smart Grain, and Skin Detail as needed.
Process and download
Apply and export your enhanced portrait.
Adjust (Light, Color, Tint, Grain)
The Adjust panel gives you manual control over your image's lighting, color balance, tint, and texture. These are non-AI adjustments and do not consume credits.
Light
Fine-tune photos that are too dark or overexposed. Go to Edit, Adjust, Light. Use the sliders for Exposure, Brightness, Contrast, Highlights, and Shadows. Click Apply.
Color
Improve vibrancy or match your brand palette. Go to Edit, Adjust, Color. Tweak Hue, Saturation, or Temperature. Click Apply.
Tint
Add a colored overlay to shift the mood or match a visual theme. Go to Edit, Adjust, Tint. Choose a preset or adjust the tint color manually. Set the intensity with the slider. Click Apply.
Grain
Add texture for a retro or film-like look. Go to Edit, Adjust, Grain. Use the slider to control the grain level. Click Apply.
Presets and Filters
Filters apply one-click color and tone adjustments to your image. Go to Edit, Adjust, Filters. Browse the filter library and choose one. Adjust the filter strength if needed. Click Apply.
Download formats
| Setting | Options |
|---|---|
| Upload formats | JPG, JPEG, PNG, SVG, WebP |
| Download formats | JPG, PNG, PDF |
| Watermark | None |
After editing, you can also continue editing with other tools, send to a mockup, or use in a design.
Tips and best practices
Start with a high-quality image. Low-resolution uploads limit what AI can do. The better the source, the better the result.
Combine tools in one session. You can retouch, resize, adjust, and restyle all in a single workflow without leaving the Image Editor.
Use Retouch for targeted changes, Erase for removal. Retouch replaces what you select with something new. Erase removes it and fills in naturally.
Leave prompts blank in Expand. If you just want the AI to extend the image naturally based on what is already there, skip the prompt.
Use Brush mask for fine details. Hair, shadows, and textures benefit from the adjustable brush. Use Lasso for larger, well-defined areas.
Check credit cost before processing. Hover over action buttons to see the cost, especially for tools that consume credits.
Adjust and Filters are free. Light, Color, Tint, Grain, and Filters do not consume credits. Use them as much as you need.
Visual mode for layout changes. When you need to reposition elements or indicate specific areas, drawing on the image is often faster than describing coordinates in words.
